What is the Aged Parent Visa (804)

The Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804) is a permanent visa allowing eligible aged parents of settled Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to live in Australia indefinitely. It is a non-contributory option, meaning lower government fees.

Applicants must be in Australia (but not in immigration clearance) when applying and meet age criteria to receive the Australian age pension. While offering permanency, this visa pathway is known for its extensive processing queues due to limited annual places.

Why Meeting Requirements & Moving Quickly is Critical

The Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804) has limited places available each year, leading to very long processing queues. An incomplete or incorrect application can cause significant further delays or even refusal once it finally reaches assessment after many years of waiting.

Ensuring all complex eligibility criteria, like the Balance of Family Test and Assurance of Support, are perfectly met at the time of lodgement is vital. Acting promptly to secure your place in the queue with a decision-ready application is crucial for this permanent visa pathway.

Meeting Key Eligibility for Subclass 804

The Aged Parent Visa requires satisfying the strict “Balance of Family Test,” where at least half your children are eligible (e.g., Australian citizens/PRs) or more eligible children live in Australia than any other single country. You must also be sponsored by an eligible, settled child.

Failing to meet these core tests, or the age and Assurance of Support requirements, will lead to refusal. A thorough assessment of these complex criteria before applying is essential to determine your true eligibility for this permanent visa.

Frequently Asked Questions About Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804)

The Subclass 804 visa is a permanent visa allowing eligible aged parents of settled Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to live in Australia indefinitely.

You must generally be old enough to receive the Australian age pension (currently 67+ for most), be in Australia when applying, have an eligible sponsoring child, and meet the Balance of Family Test.

This test usually requires that at least half of your children are eligible children living permanently in Australia, or that more of your eligible children live in Australia than in any other single country.

Processing times are very lengthy, potentially many years (even decades), due to high demand and annual caps on visa grants. Applicants typically wait on a bridging visa.

Applicants pay a visa application charge in two instalments. An “Assurance of Support” (AoS) is also required, which is a financial guarantee from an assurer (often the sponsor) to cover social security costs.

Yes, once the permanent Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804) is granted, you can live, work, and study in Australia and will generally be eligible to enrol in Medicare.

You may be able to include your partner in your application. Other dependent children can sometimes be included, but they must meet specific criteria. All applicants must meet health and character requirements.

Contributory Parent visas (like Subclass 864 or 143) generally have much faster processing times but involve significantly higher government application charges and often a larger Assurance of Support bond.

The visa application charge starts from AUD $7,190 for a single applicant, paid in two instalments (as of June 2025). The first instalment is paid when you apply, and the second when requested by the Department. Additional costs apply for extra family members, health checks, and police certificates.
